On
March 24 ,2007 , Cartwright High School caught fire from an overnight vandalism. A fire in the outside recycling containers resulted in damage to school windows adjacent to the containers. The windows of the principal’s office and the window below it were pulled apart, and the walls were blackened by fire damage. Damage to the school was initially estimated at approximately C$90,000; subsequent investigations have shown the damage to be far more extensive, with potential damage to the underlying floor joists that may require closure of the school if the repair costs exceed the value of the school. The school was closed the day after the fire, and students were taught in portables and at a nearby public school.
An investigation by the Durham Regional Police Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) resulted in the arrest of two 16-year old young offenders; they were charged with one count each of Arson Causing Damage.
