Sandburg, Plymouth, and Hosterman have pools that are used for swimming events and, in the case of Sandburg and Plymouth, swimming lessons. Although the Armstrong swim team practices at Plymouth and the Cooper swim team practices at Sandburg, both teams hold their home meets at Hosterman, where diving blocks can be legally used in all lanes.
The elementary schools have one of the largest chess programs in the state. Every elementary school
chess club has at least 15 kids, and one, that of Sunny Hollow, has recently reached over 75 kids before they had to start turning down club hopefuls. This program is largely due to the leadership of Daa Mahowald, the co-coach of the majority of elementary chess clubs when the district realized the need for a chess coordinator. She has taken a less active role in specific chess clubs as the coordinator.ee also
