* 1874 – East Broad Top narrow gauge railroad in Pennsylvania operates its first revenue trains.

20th century

* 1934 – The Broadway-Rensselaer streetcar line in Albany, New York, operated by United Traction Company, is abandoned.
* 1961 – Maritime, Coal Railway and Power Company, in Nova Scotia, ceases operations.
* 1983 – In preparation for a sale of the Alaska Railroad's assets to the state of Alaska, the United States Railway Association sets the railroad's fair market value at $22.3 million.
* 1988 – Boston and Maine Railroad's former Connecticut River Railroad line is transferred to Amtrak for the restoration of "Montrealer" service, which became Amtrak's "Vermonter".
