History
Nearly 100 years old, Penn State Lehigh Valley developed strong associate degree offerings over the years. In 1970, it expanded its academic program by providing up to the first two years of most of Penn State's baccalaureate degree majors.
In 1972, the campus made significant changes to its academic plans to include continuing education programs in addition to its baccalaureate offerings. In 1978, the campus moved to its present location, in Fogelsville. The Lehigh Valley campus includes one buildings on approximately 40 acres (160,000 m²) of land, as well as a Corporate Learning Center located some miles away in Bethlehem, PA. The Lehigh Valley campus offers baccalaureate degrees in Applied Psychology, Business, Elementary Education, Information Sciences and Technology (IST), and Professional Writing. Students may also complete an associate degree in IST.
Currently, the Lehigh Valley campus has more than 700 full-time and part-time undergraduate students. An additional 3,000 students enroll each year in its continuing education programs.
Although Penn State Lehigh Valley offers students with the same academic opportunities as University Park, the campus has been criticized for its lack of opportunities, both academic and extracurricular. Penn State Lehigh Valley has fewer clubs than University Park. Organizations that exist on campus are considerably smaller than their University Park equivalents. When asked about their experiences, many students stated that Penn State Lehigh Valley provided them with a "sterile" college experience, largely due to the fact that it is a commuter campus.
