It is very important because it has the largest stand of mangroves, one of the last bits of saltmarsh and the largest sea grass beds in Pittwater. Careel Bay is a Fish Nursery and is important to Pittwater and near by coastal waters. Careel Bay has some rare and unusual birds, who visit or live in Careel Bay.Some of these birds, from East-Asia, use Careel Bay as a stop off area. It is also a breeding ground for these birds. The Federal Government and Australian people are committed to a number of agreements to protect theses birds and their habitat.

Careel Bay in the 1960’s was a garbage tip. This meant putting wastes on the mangroves and destroying many animals habitats. Luckily in the 1970’s the waste mound was closed. It was closed people began to understand the importance of Careel Bay. When the waste tip was closed it was covered in soil and a soccer field was created on top. A board walk is there for people to view the scenery. As I was there I realised that the change from a waste tip to a lovely scenery and soccer field.

The special thing about Careel Bay is that it has many different styles right next to each other. There are: Salt marsh lands, Mangroves and also Woodlands.

Many people come down and volunteer to help clean up and care for the Careel Bay Environment. Also along with paid workers from the government to frequently clean ad look after the environment.

Many people don’t realize that wetlands only cover 3% of the world yet they are the most important ecosystem of the world. Wetlands also have a special ability to treat the water pollution. Wetlands most important ability is that they trap huge quantities of carbon dioxide.
