Sandra M. Lovelace Nicholas (surname “Lovelace Nicholas”), CM (born
April 15 ,1948 ) is aMaliseet Canadian senator representingNew Brunswick .She was appointed by Prime Minister
Paul Martin onSeptember 21 ,2005 . AMaliseet fromTobique First Nation , she is anactivist foraboriginal rights . She became known internationally when, in 1977, she petitioned theUnited Nations over the treatment by theCanadian government of aboriginal women and children in Canada, in the case known as "Sandra Lovelace v. Canada ". In 1985, she successfully had a section of theIndian Act removed which revoked an aboriginal woman's Indian status if she married a non-aboriginal man. In 1990, she was made a Member of theOrder of Canada and, in 1992, she received theGovernor General’s Award in Commemoration of thePersons Case . She studied at St. Thomas University and also obtained a degree in residentialconstruction from theMaine Northern Technical College . She is also acarpenter and amother of four.External links
