Salisbury class frigate

Salisbury class frigate

The Type 61 "Salisbury" class were a class of British aircraft direction (or radar picket) frigates built for the Royal Navy. They were a follow on from the Type 41 "Leopard" class frigates, but with reduced armament to make way for more aircraft direction equipment.

Four ships of the class were built:
* built by HMD Devonport, laid down 1 January 1952 and launched 25 June 1953.
* built by Fairfield, laid down 26 June 1953 and launched 21 April 1955.
* built by Hawthorn Leslie, laid down 27 August 1953 and launched 30 November 1955.
* HMS|Lincoln|F99 built by Fairfield, laid down 1 June 1955 and launched 6 April 1959.

As single-role vessels they were replaced by the more adaptable "Leander"-class.

HMS "Llandaff" was sold to the Bangladesh Navy in 1976 as the "Umar Farooq", and is currently in reserve. Three planned vessels, HMS "Coventry", "Exeter" and "Gloucester" were canceled and re-ordered as "Leanders".
