Arnold Cipher

Arnold Cipher

The Arnold Cipher was a book cipher developed by Benedict Arnold, the infamous turncoat of the American Revolution. His cipher was used to communicate with his conspirator, John André. Arnold used a book as a key to the cipher, such as "Commentaries on the Laws of England by William Blackstone" or "Nathan Bailey's Dictionary." He would send André a piece of paper on which was written a series of numbers (separated by periods); a page number of the agreed book, a line number on that page, and a word number in that line. Arnold added missing letters or suffixes where he could not find a match in one of the books.

120.9.7 would refer to the 120th page, the 9th line on that page, and the seventh word in that line, which, in the following example is "general":

"120.9.7, W------- 105.9.5's on the .22.9.14.---- / of 163.8.19 F----- 172.8.7s to 56.9.8 |30.000| 172.8.70 to 11.94. in / 62.8.20. If 179.8.25, 84.8.9'd, 177.9.28. The above translates into:
