Moirae (military)

Moirae (military)

Moirae ( _el. "Μοίρα") was in the Byzantine Army the analogue of a Division in the modern armies.

The Commander of a Moira was given the title of Drungarios.

One Moira (=Division) was divided into ten Tagmata (=Battalions).

From Moira the later Greek word "Moirarhia" or "Merarhia" (meaning also Division) is derived.
