Scott Benzel

Scott Benzel (born in Scottsdale, Arizona. Lives and works in Los Angeles) is an American artist, songwriter, singer and producer.

Projects have included Machines of Loving Grace (of which he was frontman and primary songwriter), and Destroy All Monsters, the band led by American artist Mike Kelley. He collaborated with Mike Kelley on the soundtrack to Kelley's epic film and art installation, Day is Done.

In addition to work with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Lucinda Williams, Boss Hog, Destroy All Monsters, The Red Krayola, and various others, Benzel has produced albums for Fat Possum Records, Plug Research in Los Angeles and for Paul Avion's Par Avion project.

Biography

Benzel was born in Scottsdale, Arizona and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada. He graduated from the University of Arizona after undergraduate work at California Institute of the Arts.

Machines of Loving Grace (later Machines) was an industrial/post-punk band from Tucson, Arizona. They formed in 1989 as Machines of Loving Grace (named for a Richard Brautigan poem). The original lineup consisted of Scott Benzel, Stuart Kupers, and Mike Fisher, with Brad Kemp added shortly thereafter. They released their debut, self-titled album in 1991 and contributed a song to "The Crow" (feature film soundtrack). Machines of Loving Grace recorded two more albums for Atlantic Records- Concentration and Gilt-before disbanding in 1995.

Benzel began producing and remixing for other artists, often working with co-producer Jim Waters (Sonic Youth, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion).

In 1998, Benzel returned to California Institute of the Arts and received his MFA in 2001.

Benzel currently works with Shawn King and Nate Flannigan, in electronic band Soulo,signed to Plug Research. He has collaborated with visual and sound artists including Andrea Bowers, Tom Recchion, Sam Durant, and Mike Kelley.
