nature reserve ) located inBuryatia (Russia ) on the west slope of theBarguzin Range , including the northeast shores of theLake Baikal and a part of thelake itself. The name of the preserve (and the range) comes from theBarguzin River .The area of the reserve is 2,482 km² (992.8 square miles). It was created in 1916 to preserve and increase the numbers of
Barguzin Sable ("Martes zibellina"). Mountainous andtaiga landscapes are also being preserved. The Barguzin Nature Reserve is inhabited by elks,musk deer (known as "kabarga"),brown bear s,black-capped marmot s,grouse , etc.Omul s,sig s,sturgeon s,grayling s,taimen s (таймень),lenok s (ленок) and otherfish spawn in the rivers of the reserve.
