Baseball

*The "American League War"
**The AL leaves the National Agreement and competes with the National League as a second major league --we say in retrospect, knowing its success. The AL abandons four western cities for Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Boston and signs about 30 prominent NL players before the season.
**The National League violates its National Agreement in the summer and there will be no major-minor agreement until 1903.
*In December numerous minor leagues establish their own National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, commonly called Minor League Baseball (1902 to date).

* First Division - Liverpool win the 1900-01 title.
* FA Cup - Tottenham Hotspur beat Sheffield United 3-1 in a replay after drawing 2-2 in the first match. Tottenham are the first (and so far only) non-League side to win the FA Cup.
* Brighton & Hove Albion FC formed.

Ice hockey

*January 29–31, 1901 -Winnipeg Victorias win their 2nd Stanley Cup, defeating the defending champion Montreal Shamrocks in a Cup challenges two games to none.
* February 1901 - Winnipeg Victorias win the Manitoba Hockey Association (MHA) title over the Winnipeg Hockey Club and defend the Stanley Cup title.
* March 1901 - Ottawa Hockey Club wins the Canadian Amateur Hockey League (CAHL) championship. Ottawa declines to challenge Winnipeg for the Stanley Cup.

Lacrosse

*Sir Donald Mann donates the Mann Cup.
*Lord Minto, the Governor General of Canada, donates the Minto Cup.
*The Ottawa Capitals win the first Mann Cup and the first Minto Cup.

Yacht racing

*The New York Yacht Club retains the America's Cup as "Columbia" defeats British challenger "Shamrock II", of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club, 3 races to 0
