The band was originally formed in 2004, soon after
Jim Suptic had finished recording the final Get Up Kids album,Guilt Show . There was a good deal of tension within the band, and Jim had written several songs that he felt didn't fit The Get Up Kids. [Alternative Press issue 204 "Say Goodnight, Mean Goodbye: An Oral History of the Get Up Kids] After the band decided to break up in 2005, Blackpool Lights became his primary focus.The band released a self-titled, self-published five-song EP in 2005. Suptic soon co-founded
Curb Appeal Records in early 2006 with other local entrepreneurs and musicians including Alex Brahl. Alex had producedSomething to Write Home About , the album that gaveThe Get Up Kids much of their success. OnJune 20 , 2006 Blackpool Lights' debut albumThis Town's Disaster was released, becoming the first release for the label. The day of the release,Spin Magazine named the band the "Artist of the Day". Both Billy and Brian are former members of the Kansas City band The Creature Comforts. Billy left the band on good terms, though no explanation for his departure has been given. The Forecast .In 2007, their song "Ain't Nobody Gonna Stop Us Now" was chosen as the official anthem for the
