Port Askaig is a port village on the east coast of the island of Islay, in Scotland. It serves as the main port of Islay along with Port Ellen sharing passenger services to the Scottish mainland. It also has a regular service to Feolin, Jura across the Sound of Islay and to Oban once a week. Port Askaig is memorialized in the classic 6/8 bagpipe pipe march "Leaving Port Askaig."

Facilities

Port Askaig has a hotel, a petrol station and shop next to the port but has very few households.

Renovation project

The link to Oban is likely to be expanded in the near future because the Scottish Executive are around 50% through of a £7M civil engineering development in Port Askaig which will result in much enhanced berthing facilities for larger ferries and commercial and pleasure craft. The last phase of this operation started in November 2006 and was completed in 2007. The pier had been closed since 20 December 2006 and reopened in June 2007.

Islay lifeboat

Port Askaig is the base of the Islay RNLI lifeboat which is called out ten to twelve times a year.
