Battle of Mobile (1781)

Battle of Mobile (1781)

The Battle of Mobile was part of a British counter-offensive aimed at recapturing the town of Mobile from the Spanish during the American Revolutionary War. On January 7, 1781, the British attack foundered before a coordinated Spanish defense.

Spanish authorities in Cuba, learning of the attack, dispatched additional forces to hold Mobile. The British, meanwhile, nursing heavy losses in men and officers, fled back to their main base at Pensacola. Spanish Field Marshal Bernardo de Gálvez captured this city later in the year, completing his reconquest of West Florida.
