Yaacob Ibrahim (born
3 October 1955 ,Singapore ) is theMinister for the Environment and Water Resources andMinister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs inSingapore .On
2 January 1997 , Yaacob was elected as one of four Members of Parliament (MP) for theJalan Besar Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and was re-elected in 2001. He became a Minister on25 March 2002 with the appointment asMinister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs .Yaacob graduated from the
University of Singapore with a degree (honours) in Civil Engineering in 1980. He later obtained a PhD fromStanford University in 1989 and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow atCornell University . He returned to Singapore in 1990 and joined theNational University of Singapore , becoming a faculty member in 1991. He received the department's teaching excellence award for the academic year of 1994 to 1995.Yaacob has been active in community service, both locally and overseas. He was a youth member of
Muslim Missionary Society of Singapore (Jamiyah). He served as a volunteer tutor for theCouncil for the Development of Singapore Muslim Community (Yayasan Mendaki) and would later become its Chairman in March 2002. He is also actively involved withIslamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) andAssociation of Muslim Professionals (AMP) and was a member of the MUIS Council from 1992 to 1996.Since September 2005, Yaacob heads an inter-ministerial committee to tackle the
2005 dengue outbreak in Singapore .ee also
