KGUN is the ABC-affiliated television station serving Tucson, Arizona. The station broadcasts on analog Channel 9 and digital Channel 35 from Mount Bigelow northeast of Tucson.

History

KGUN was founded by rancher D.W. Ingram in 1956. He named the station KDWI after his initials. Ingram quickly sold it to May Broadcasting of Shenandoah, Iowa which changed the callsign, noting the negative connotations of the initials DWI. The new calls, KGUN were chosen for a combination of May Broadcasting's owner being both a gun collector and his love of Westerns which often took place in the Tucson area. May would sell its television holdings (KGUN and KMTV in Omaha, Nebraska) to Lee Enterprises in 1986, which sold said stations to Emmis Communications in 2000.In 2005, Emmis liquidated all of its television properties, sending KGUN and control of KMTV to the Milwaukee based Journal Broadcast Group, [http://www.emmis.com/press/Release.aspx?ID=44572] which already owned four radio stations in Tucson. The sale was finalized in December 2005. (Journal eventually purchased KMTV outright in March 2007.) The station was revamped on September 12, 2006, when Journal changed KGUN's logo, graphics, set, music, and weather center to match the glossy imaging of other stations in the Journal Broadcast Group, as well as returning the slogan to their longtime "On Your Side" campaign.

On March 18, 2008, Journal announced that it would purchase CW affiliate KWBA (Channel 58) from Cascade Broadcasting Group for $11.885M. A waiver was granted by the FCC on June 3, 2008, setting up a second duopoly in the Tucson area besides Belo Corporation's KMSB/KTTU [http://www.jsonline.com/watch/?watch=1&date=3/18/2008&id=37146] .
