"Puzzle Bobble 4" is the third sequel to the video game "Puzzle Bobble" and is the final appearance of the series on the Arcade, Sony PlayStation and Dreamcast. The game is also the final title to be recognizably similar in presentation to the original.

Building upon the success of "Puzzle Bobble 3", the game adds a pulley system that requires two sets of bubbles, attached to either side of a rope hanging across two pulleys, to be popped in sequence with each other so that the two sides remain balanced. The game contains a story mode for single player play.

In total, the game features 640 levels. It features a level editor on the console version to either create and save a level, set a succession of levels, or to create an unlimited amount of extra levels and stages.

The console version also has an alternative "story mode" and a hidden tarot game to tell a player's love life.

Characters

*Bub, Bob:Stated as Bubblen and Bobblen, they are the original characters which the Bubble Bobble series and Puzzle Bobble/Bust-A-Move series are based on. The names have been spelled as Bubblun and Bobblun (with letter U's instead of E's) in previous games, and in the Bubble Bobble series.
*Kurol:An infant that wears a frog suit. He attacks with musical notes and a pillow.
*Develon:A character that resembles the Super Dark Great Dragon of Bubble Memories, as well as Bub and Bob.
*Gigant:A large robot that resembles a knight with a helm that has a plume of fire. When he attacks, a huge wave of fire and electricity that comes from his chest to strike opponents.
*Alkanet:The princess of ice who attacks with crystals rising from the ground.
*Tam Tam:A living Totem Pole with two "worshipers" at its feet. He is usually under the ground, but rises when players get chains/combos, with glowing white eyes, and lightning.
*Marino:A young merman who attacks with waves. Despite living in the ocean, when he receives bubbles from the opponent, he ironically appears to drown from the waves.
*G:A forgetful old man. He attacks by increasing in size and looking fierce. He is known as the famous "Bubble Hermit" in "Bust-A-Move Millennium".
*Bramb:An alien who appears intelligent. resemblance is Jar Jar Bink While saying, "Let's go!," it attacks while having an aura surrounding it.
*Kurion:A pixie of the night who works for Madam Luna. Her name is spelled Kurion on the arcade game version, but her name is spelled Cleon on the console versions. Kurion is the Japanese pronunciation for Cleon. Despite this, Kurion is also called Cleon by Madam Luna in their dialogue sequence, creating some confusion.
*Woolen:A hidden character on the PlayStation and Dreamcast versions of the game. Woolen resembles one of the horned girls from the puzzle game Pop'n Pop. This character is "unlocked" and appears in the "Challenge mode" after 12 or so wins. She cannot be used in game's Story vs. mode. (Console Only Character)
*Maita/Mighta:The classic Mighta from Bubble Bobble, is another hidden character that appears in the Challenge mode when it is unlocked. It cannot be used in Story vs. mode (Console Only Character).
*Monsta:The classic Monsta from Bubble Bobble, is a hidden character that appears in the Challenge mode when it is unlocked. It cannot be used in Story vs. mode (Console Only Character).
*Packy:A Taito character who appears in some of Taito's games, including Puzzle Bobble 2. It is a hidden character that appears in the Challenge mode when it is unlocked and attacks by shooting laser beams out of its eyes. It cannot be used in Story vs. mode (Console Only Character). The character is also featured in its own redemption game, "Packy's Treasure Slot."
