homepage = [http://www.fox11az.com/ www.fox11az.com]KMSB-TV is the Fox-affiliated television station serving
Tucson, Arizona . The station broadcasts in analog on VHF channel 11 and in digital on UHF channel 25 (11.1). Since the hilly terrain of Tucson hinders broadcast reception in parts of the city, KMSB has a translator, K50FV, on channel 50 atop Mount Bigelow to serve east Tucson. Also, since it is located inGreen Valley, Arizona , the signal is slightly hard to pick up in the northern part ofTucson andMarana .History
Tucson gained its first
independent station when KZAZ signed on the airFebruary 1 1967 . [citation |title=Channel 11 Will Start Telecasts |newspaper=Tucson Daily Citizen |page=p. 13 |date=1967-01-31 ] It was licensed to Nogales and had its main studios there, but also had an office in Tucson, sharing facilities with a production company that was owned by a group headed by actorDanny Thomas . The same ownership group also owned KZAZ. [citation |title=KZAZ-TV Will Have Office Here |newspaper=Tucson Daily Citizen |page=p. 56 |date=1966-11-17 ] . The station aired movies in both English and Spanish, dramas, sitcoms, and other general entertainment fare. It had a local news department and newscast. In 1984, the station was sold to Mountain States Broadcasting, a division of the Providence Journal Company, who changed the call letters to KMSB-TV on
September 12 1985 . To cut costs, Providence Journal axed KZAZ's news broadcasts once they took over. The station became a charter Fox affiliate when the network signed onOctober 9 ,1986 , and has been affiliated with Fox longer than any other station in Arizona. In the early 1990s, KMSB began operating
KTTU , which had been owned byClear Channel Communications , and was allowed to move its city of license from Nogales to Tucson in 1991.Belo Corporation became the owner of KMSB after the company purchased Providence Journal's holdings in 1997.After not having a newscast for nearly 20 years, KMSB began a 9 PM newscast in 2003 [http://www.belo.com/pressRelease.x2?release=20030428-01.html] . From the newscast's inception until August 2008, it was produced by sister station
KTVK in Phoenix using KTVK news anchors and meteorologists, with live reports from KMSB reporters as well as fromNBC affiliateKVOA . Sports began originating entirely from the KMSB studios in Tucson in 2006. On August 20, 2008, the news portion of 9 PM newscast began originating out of the KMSB studios as well with Lou Raguse as anchor. Currently, weather is still being done by KTVK personalities in Phoenix. The station was one of the last top-100 market Fox affiliates to air late-evening news. KMSB retired from cartoons at the same time;4Kids TV now airs on KTTU. KMSB also broadcasts KTVK's "Good Morning Arizona" from Phoenix.News Operations
KMSB Fox 11 produces a half-hour nine o'clock newscast each night. KMSB also produces the "Fox 11 Sports Force," a local sports show anchored by Vinnie Vinzetta, on Fridays and Sundays immediately following the 9PM newscast.
