Talke is a village in the English county of Staffordshire, four miles northwest of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Etymology

Its unusual name is derived from the even more unusual "Talk o' th' Hill" which means 'bush on top of the hill'. [cite web|url=http://www3.shropshire-cc.gov.uk/talke.htm |title=Literary Heritage - Talke |accessdate=2007-01-14 |publisher=Shropshire County Council ] Talke is mentioned in the Domesday Book as "Talc" in 1086.

History

Talke was made a civil parish in 1932, being transferred from the disbanded Audley Urban District to being part of the Kidsgrove Urban District [cite web|url=http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/relationships.jsp?u_id=10294472 |title= Unit history of Talke |publisher=A Vision of Britain |accessdate=2007-01-14] which subsequently became part of the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Talke and Talke Pits were formerly mining sites, which is why there are such road names as "Coal Pit Hill". There are no longer remnants of its industrial past, as nowadays Talke is a large housing estate.

Notable people

Reginald Mitchell (1895-1937), the creator of the Spitfire aeroplane was a native of the village.
