Kolmannskuppe "(also Kolmanskuppe with just one n;
Afrikaans : Kolmanskop)" is aghost town in southernNamibia , a few kilometres inland from the port ofLüderitz . It was a small mining village and is now a popular tourist destination run by the joint firmNAMDEB (Namibia-De Beers ).It developed after the discovery of
diamond s in the area in 1908, to provide shelter for workers from the harsh environment of theNamib Desert . The village was built like a German town, with facilities like ahospital ,ballroom ,power station ,school , skittle-alley,theater and sport-hall,casino ,ice factory and the firstx-ray -stationFact|date=February 2007 in the southern hemisphere. It also had arailway line toLüderitz .The town declined after
World War I as diamond prices crashed, and operations moved toOranjemund . It was abandoned in 1956 but has since been partly restored. The geological forces of thedesert mean that tourists can now walk through houses knee-deep in sand.Trivia
The 2000 film "
The King Is Alive " was filmed in Kolmanskop, with the town being utilized as the film's main setting.The town was also used as one of the locations in the 1993 film "Dust Devil".
