homepage = [http://www.westernreservepbs.org/ www.westernreservepbs.org]WNEO and WEAO are PBS member stations in northeastern
Ohio , simulcasting together as Western Reserve PBS. Until October 1, 2008, the stations were known as PBS 45 & 49.WNEO and WEAO are operated from studio facilities in
Kent, Ohio by Northeastern Educational Television of Ohio, which is a consortium of theUniversity of Akron ,Kent State University andYoungstown State University .History
WNEO first began broadcasting in 1973. Licensed to
Alliance, Ohio , the station serves the Youngstown area from a transmitter site inSalem, Ohio . WNEO also operates translator station W58AM near Youngstown itself (on WFMJ's tower), serving the low-lying Mahoning Valley. The FCC has awarded the station with a construction permit for ch 44 as their digital translator (W44CR-DT). [http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/tvq?call=W58AM]WEAO first began broadcasting in 1975. Licensed to
Akron, Ohio , it broadcasts from a transmitter site inCopley, Ohio and provides theCleveland area with a second PBS member station, alongsideWVIZ . Previously, channel 49 had been the home of Akron's WAKR-TV from 1953 until 1967. WAKR-TV moved to Channel 23, and is nowWVPX .Although WNEO is considered the main station, its studios are located on the campus of Kent State, near Akron.
On October 1st, 2008 at 5:30 A.M., WNEO and WEAO changed on-screen branding to Western Reserve PBS, a part of the station's overall branding change to Western Reserve Public Media. [ [http://www.westernreservepbs.org/news/newname08.htm PBS 45 & 49 to Change Name to Western Reserve Public Media ] ] The rebranding was done to make the station's identity better reflect the viewing area, and due to the fact that the combined WNEO/WEAO operations are broadcast on different cable channels. virtual channel as 49 while PSIP technology is not needed for a virtual channel for WNEO.In addition, with WNEO moving its digital signal to its current analog channel 45, WNEO's analog signal will shut down in December 2008 (two months before the mandated shutdown) to prepare for the move.
