"Red Dust" is an American 1932 romantic drama film directed by Victor Fleming. [ [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0023382/ "Red Dust"] at the Internet Movie Database.] The picture is the second of six movies Clark Gable and Jean Harlow made together and was produced during the Pre-Code era of Hollywood.

Plot

Conditions are spartan on Dennis Carson's (Clark Gable) Indochina (Vietnam) rubber plantation during a dusty dry monsoon. The latest boat upriver brings Carson an unwelcome guest: Vantine (Jean Harlow), a floozy from Saigon hoping to evade the police by a stay upcountry.

Carson, initially uninterested, soon succumbs to Vantine's charms; that is, until Gary Willis (Gene Raymond), ill with malaria, and his stunning wife Barbara (Mary Astor) show up.

Adaptation

The movie was remade by director John Ford in 1953 as "Mogambo", this time set in Africa rather than Indochina and shot on location in color, with Ava Gardner in the Harlow role and Grace Kelly playing Astor's part. Clark Gable returned, twenty-one years later, to play the same character.

Recognition

In 2006, "Red Dust" was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
