11 December 1974 ) is anauthor , reviewer andcritic , specializing in narrative non-fiction, with a particular emphasis onlanguage and cultural history.He was educated at
Eton College , where he was aKing's Scholar , and then read English atChrist Church, Oxford before researching hisPhD , onSamuel Johnson andSir Thomas Browne , atUniversity College London .
