The King's Academy

The King's Academy

The King's Academy is a secondary school and a city academy located in Coulby Newham in the borough of Middlesbrough and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. Established in 2003, it is run by the Emmanuel Schools Foundation (formerly the Vardy Foundation run by Sir Peter Vardy). It was officially opened by Prime Minister Tony Blair in March 2004.

It was built to replace the former council run Brackenhoe and Coulby Newham secondary schools and accepted its first students from educational years 7 to 11 on 8 September 2003. It has capacity for 1250 students. It is wholly funded by the Department for Education and Skills and operates an Intake Policy based upon that in place across the council-maintained schools in Middlesbrough. It holds 10% intake for children with Statements of Special Educational Need, most particularly those with hearing and visual impairments and with moderate learning difficulties.

The academy also runs a sixth form college.

Its principals have been Mr Nigel McQuoid (8 September 2003 to 31 August 2005) and Mr Christopher P Drew (1 September 2005 to present).
