Many of the houses were poorly constructed and were only intended for short-term holiday use. As time has passed, more and more people moved into the area and stayed. Local residents fear that the character and community of Jaywick may be lost forever. Many residents will claim to live in 'West Clacton' as opposed to Jaywick as the town has an infamous regard within Essex and the East End of London.
