- Baby D (dance group)
Baby D is the name of a UK
Drum'n'Bass /Euro House band, well known for their single "Let Me Be Your Fantasy ", number one on theUK Singles Chart in 1994.Career
The band was formed by Floyd Dyce (stage name Dice), who was the in-house producer at
Production House Records , a record label which had been set up in 1987 by former recording artistPhil Fearon , whose disco group Galaxy had had a number of hits in the early 1980s including the top tenners "Dancing Tight", "What Do I Do?", "Everybody's Laughin'", and "I Can Prove It". Heavily involved with therave scene, Dyce wrote and performed under several different names including "The House Crew", "DMS" and "Xstatic", and formed Baby D as yet another outlet for his compositions. The other members werePhil Fearon 's wife Dorothy on vocals (who had earlier sung on some Galaxy songs under the name Dee Galdes), and Terry Jones (stage name MC Nino) on vocals and keyboards. Another staff member at Production House came up with the name Baby D although it did not refer to Dorothy; the "D" did not actually stand for anything.Fact|date=January 2008Early singles between 1991 and 1994 were "underground" hits, but failed to cross over into the pop mainstream. Two of them scraped into the lower end of the Top 75. "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" was the exception, in that although it had not made the Top 75 at all when first released in 1992, it continued to be a small but steady seller, hanging around the bottom half of the unpublished Top 200 listing for two years and clocking up sales of around 40,000. In 1994 the track was signed by
London Records and re-released, at which point it promptly debuted on the chart at number three and then spent two weeks at number one, this time selling about a quarter of a million copies. In the summer of 1995 Baby D reached number three with a rave version of the
Korgis ' 1980ballad "Everybody's Got To Learn Sometime", re-titled "I Need Your Loving". Other hits followed, and a Top 5 album ("Deliverance"), but then the band broke up. Dyce now runs his own record label, Redmaster, and still writes and produces, while Fearon and Jones still appear sporadically as Baby D; Jones also co-wrote a Number One for pop act Peter Andre, and re-mixed and produced for successful girl group Eternal and U.S. hearthrobs Backstreet Boys, as well as St Etienne vocalist Sarah Cracknell. In 2000 a
remix of "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" (courtesy of the Trick or Treat production team), made the Top 20. The song was covered byAshley Jade , in 2004, but although it made #19 on the Hot Dance Singles chart, it did not make the main listing.Band personnel
