Julie Dash (born
October 22 ,1952 inLong Island City, Queens , New York) is aUnited States filmmaker . Her "Daughters of the Dust " in 1991 was the first full-lengthfilm with general theatrical release in the United States by an African American woman. "Daughters of the Dust" was included in theNational Film Registry in 2004. She is an honorary member ofAlpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.Julie Dash was named a 2007 USA Rockefeller Foundation Fellow and awarded a $50,000 grant by
