Haitian general election, 1990–1991

Haitian general election, 1990–1991

The presidential election in Haïti in 1990 is often cited as the first democratic election in the country's history. It was won by Jean-Bertrand Aristide, who was sworn in as President of Haïti on 1991-02-07; he was deposed in a coup d'état just eight months later.

Legislative elections to the Chamber of Deputies and to the Senate were held shortly after the presidential election. They left Aristide's National Front for Change and Democracy ("Front National pour le Changement et la Démocratie", FNCD) as the largest party, but without a majority in either chamber.
