Gusev ( _ru. Гу́сев; _de. Gumbinnen; _lt. Gumbinė; _pl. Głąbin/Gąbin) is a town in
Kaliningrad Oblast ,Russia . It is situated close to the border withLithuania , east ofChernyakhovsk . Population: 28,467 (2002 Census).As Gumbinnen, the town was the capital of Regierungsbezirk Gumbinnen in the Prussian
Province of East Prussia . Gumbinnen became part of theGerman Empire during theunification of Germany in 1871. TheBattle of Gumbinnen , a major battle on the Eastern Front ofWorld War I , took place nearby in August 1914.During the Nazi era, Gumbinnen was a military sub-region of the
Königsberg military area, and was the headquarters of the 206th Depot-Abteilung.On
21 January 1945 , Gumbinnen was captured by theRed Army . The following year, on7 September 1946 , it was renamed Gusev, after the Soviet Captain, Sergei Ivanovich Gusev, born in 1918, killed in action in the battle for the town in January 1945, who was posthumously given the titleHero of the Soviet Union on19 April 1945 .External links
