college radio station broadcasting from theUniversity of San Francisco , USA.KUSF began life in
1963 as a campus-onlyAM station managed by the Associated Students of the University of San Francisco (ASUSF). In1973 , USF was offered an FM radio station by a small local Bible college that wished to discontinue its radio operations. USF accepted the offer and in1977 KUSF became an FM station broadcasting on the 90.3 frequency. The old AM station later became the student-managed KDNZ.Originally broadcasting six hours a day, KUSF began broadcasting 24 hours a day in
1981 . In its first days KUSF was a conventional college station, broadcasting programs of interest to the university and the greater San Francisco community. However, KUSF soon made a name for itself playing cutting-edge music: it was one of the first radio stations to playpunk rock . Many now-famous acts also first gained exposure on KUSF, notably among themThe B-52s andMetallica . Today the station's musical programming runs the gamut from rock to hip-hop toworld music . This cutting-edge musical programming has garnered it an international reputation. It now reaches listeners around the world.Although KUSF's reputation stems from its innovative musical programming, it also maintains its community connections with programming that ranges from academic lectures to foreign-language cultural programs. KUSF also sponsors "Rock 'N' Swap", a large record collectors' fair held five times a year on the USF campus.
KUSF is currently managed by alumnus Steve Runyon, who was also the student manager of the original AM station. The station staff include volunteers from both the university and the surrounding community. The station itself is located in the basement of Phelan Hall on the USF campus.
KUSF's programming is supported by underwriting organizations and listener contributions.
