ntupdate =Walter Baseggio (born
August 19 ,1978 inClabecq ) is a Belgian footballmidfielder currently on the books ofR.E. Mouscron . He also played for the Belgian national team, though he was regularly injured for short periods of time when the national team played. Baseggio is born from Italian parents: his mother comes fromNaples and his father fromTreviso .He made an impressive debut for
R.S.C. Anderlecht aged 17, against old rivalStandard Liège , and scored his first goal on that occasion. At the time a hot prospect for the future, he was in direct competition withPär Zetterberg andEnzo Scifo , two players whose talent was already confirmed. Eventually, Baseggio became a first team regular, and then the "maestro" of the team after the departures of the aforementioned players in the late 1990s. With the come-back of Swedish Zetterberg in the summer of 2003, coachHugo Broos decided that there was no room for both players so Baseggio played few games until Broos was fired in February 2005. After a disappointing end of season, he also played second-choice for new coachFranky Vercauteren in 2005-2006, and was transfer listed, joiningItaly 'sTreviso F.B.C. 1993 in January 2006. However, in the mid-season interval of the next season, he came back to Anderlecht.In the 2008 winter transfer window, Baseggio moved to
R.E. Mouscron for an undisclosed fee, with a contract that expires in 2010.References
