Emirate of Beihan

Emirate of Beihan

Beihan or Bayhan ( _ar. بيحان [Unicode|Bayḥān] ), officially the Emirate of Beihan ( _ar. إمارة بيحان [Unicode|Imārat Bayḥān] ), was a state in the British Aden Protectorate and the Federation of South Arabia. Its capital was Suq Abdulla, now called Beihan.

History

The ruling Al Habieli family, related to the Hashemites, came to power in Beihan in the 17th century. In the late 19th century, the area came under British influence and eventually became a constituent of the Aden Protectorate. The Emirate was a founding member of the Federation of Arab Emirates of the South in 1959 and its successor, the Federation of South Arabia, in 1963. The last emir or sharif, Saleh al Hussein Al Habieli, was deposed in August 1967 and the Emirate was abolished in November 1967 upon the founding of the People's Republic of South Yemen and the area is now part of the Republic of Yemen.
