James Robert Shawkey James Robert (Bob) Shawkey was born on (December 4 1890 Died - December 31 1980) to John William Shawkey and Sarah Catherine Anthony. Right-handed pitcher from by|1913 to by|1927 He moved from Slippery Rock State College to an independent league in 1911, then to the American League in 1912 as a pitcher for Connie Mack’s Philadelphia Athletics. In 1915, Connie Mack sold his services to the New York Yankees where he remained (except for a brief service with the U.S. Navy during World War I when he served on the battleship Arkansas for 8 months) until 1931. Shawkey also served as the Yankees' manager after the untimely death of Miller Huggins. He served in this capacity for just one season, by|1930, when he guided the Yankees to a disappointing third place finish. He died at age 90 in Syracuse, New York.

Born in Sigel, Pennsylvania, He won 207 games in his career, and won 20 or more games (per season) five times (his high was 26). He held the Yankees record for 15 strike outs in a single game until Whitey Ford broke it in the mid-1960’s. Bob credited his success to a super fast ball and an outstanding curve ball. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports hall of Fame in Brookville, PA in 1970.
