Skaun is a municipality in the county of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway.

Skaun (until 1930 named "Børseskogn") was separated from Børsa January 1, 1890. Børsa and Buvik were merged with Skaun January 1, 1965.

The major villages in Skaun are Buvika, Børsa, Venn, Viggja and Eggkleiva. The administration centre is situated in Børsa.

Skaun is dominantly rural, but is nonetheless situated only 25 km from Norway's third largest city, Trondheim. Most inhabitants, except agricultural and public sector workers, have their job outside the municipality, in Trondheim, Orkanger or Melhus.

The name

The Old Norse form of the name was (also) "Skaun". The meaning of the name is unknown.

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1987). The figure represents four old standing stones in the municipality.

Famous residents of Skaun (real and fictional)

* Einar Tambarskjelve, the Viking, and his Husaby. The legend says he used the four monumental standing stones in Børsa to moor his boats. (These stones are the theme for the coat-of-arms.)
* "Kristin Lavransdatter", who was the key character in a trilogy written by the Nobel prize winner in literature Sigrid Undset. There is a celebration of this every year the second week-end in August. It takes place at Husaby, where Sigrid Undset lived while writing the second book, "Husfrue" ("Houselady"). The books also have large parts of their storyline from Husaby.
*Jostein Wilmann, biker. The best placed Norwegian in the Tour de France' time competition
*Kari Aalvik Grimsbø, goalkeeper on the Norwegian national handball team
