November 7 ,1906 , St. Louis –July 31 ,1985 ,Stamford ) was an AmericanProtestant Church leader in the 1950s and 60s, and President of theNational Council of Churches in theUnited States , 1954—1957. He was General Secretary of theWorld Council of Churches , 1966—1974.
