The municipality is named after
Vanylvsfjorden (Old Norse "Vaniflir"). The meaning of the first element is unknown, the last element ("-iflir") is also found in the namesSunnylven andSykkylven , and the meaning is probably 'fjord'.Until 1889 the name was written "Vanelven", in the period 1889-1917 "Vannelven", from 1918 on "Vanylven".
