Hjartdal is a municipality in the county of
Telemark ,Norway .The parish of "Hjertdal" was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see
formannskapsdistrikt ). It consists of three small communities: Hjartdal,Sauland andTuddal .The name
The Norse form of the name was "Hjartdalr". The first element is probably a rivername "*Hjarta" (now
Hjartdøla ), the last element is "dalr" m 'valley, dale'. The rivername is derived from "hjortr" m 'red deer '.Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1989). It shows a
