Black has long been considered ready to take on a managerial position in the major leagues, but previously resisted approaches due to family considerations. After the position went to Padres skipperBruce Bochy , Black became a candidate for the Padres job, and was officially hired on November 8, 2006. He is under contract with the Padres until the end of the 2009 season. Despite a last place finish for the Padres in 2008, management has announced that Black will return to finish his contract in 2009.
