Trysil is a municipality in the county of Hedmark, Norway.

Trysil was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt).

Name

The municipality (originally the parish) is probably named after an old farm. (Now "Prestgarden" 'the vicarage', where the first church was built.) The meaning of the first element is unknown (maybe an old rivername), the last element is "sil" n 'quiet stretch of a river'.

Until 1906 the name was written "Tryssil".

Economy

Farming and lumbering are traditionally the most important occupations in the municipality, and there are many wood related industries. The Trysilelva river was the last river in Norway with traditional timber floating. There is extensive wildlife, including a large elk population.

Trysilfjellet is the largest wintersportscentre in Norway with 65 prepared slopes.

History

The world’s first official ski competition was held here in 1855. The famous Norwegian skier Halvard Morgedal won all the competitions this year. The Trysilgutten ski club, founded in 1861, is the world’s oldest ski club.

Geography

Trysil is bordered in the north by Engerdal and Rendalen, in the west by Åmot, and in the southwest by Elverum and Våler. The eastern border of the municipality is bordered in the north, east and south by Sweden. The main village in Trysil is Innbygda which often is referred to as Trysil.
