- Holger Bech Nielsen
Holger Bech Nielsen (born
25 August ,1941 ) is a Danish theoretical physicist, professor at theNiels Bohr Institute , at theUniversity of Copenhagen , where he started studying physics in 1961.Holger Bech Nielsen has made original contributions to theoretical
particle physics specifically in the field ofstring theory . Independently of Nambu and Susskind, he was the first to propose that the Veneziano model was actually a theory of strings and this is why he is considered among the fathers of string theory. He was awarded the highly esteemedHumboldt Prize in 2001 for his scientific research. Several nuclear physics concepts are named after him, e.g. Nielsen-Olesen Vortex and the Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem for representing chiral fermions on the lattice. He is known in Denmark for his enthusiastic public lectures onphysics , his latest being atUniversity of Southern Denmark inOdense (March 10 ,2005 ), Kulturhuset iSkanderborg (January 26 ,2006 ), atEUCVest inEsbjerg (March 21 ,2006 ), and atRegensen inCopenhagen (April 12 ,2006 ). In July 2008 he lectured for children at the summer camp for theDanish Association of Gifted Children See also
