Caig made his name playing for Carlisle United from 1992 to 1998, the highlight of this time being the penalty saves in the LDV Vans Trophy at Wembley against Colchester in 1997. However, the following year he was controversially allowed to leave by club owner
Michael Knighton for a £5,000 fee just before the mid-season transfer deadline. This move eventually led to the signing ofJimmy Glass .After three years without a start for Newcastle United of the
FA Premier League , Caig signed with theUSL First Division Vancouver Whitecaps onApril 13 ,2006 . With the Whitecaps he won the USL First Division Championship, beating theRochester Raging Rhinos by a score of 2-0. Houston Dynamo in January 2008, where he was to serve as the backup toPat Onstad . Caig made his Dynamo debut onApril 6 2008 as a substitute after Onstad was injured. He conceded three goals and made three second-half saves in a 3-3 draw againstFC Dallas . Due to Onstad's injury, he played again onApril 9 2008 in theCONCACAF Champions' Cup semifinal 2nd leg againstDeportivo Saprissa .
