History

The temple was established in 1956 following the recovery of an idol of Shri Chandraprabha on August 16, 1956. The white stone idol was retrieved from underground, reinforcing the belief that this place was once a Dehra or place where Jain idols are worshipped. On March 29, 1972, a black stone idol was discovered. After the setting up of the Jain Temple, the place has regained its former importance as a pilgrimage center.[2]

Today it is a pilgrimage site of the Jains and a tourist attraction in Alwar. The ancient Jain temple dedicated to the eighth Tirthankar (great-teacher) Shri Chandraprabhu Bhagwan can be seen, with elaborate carvings and paintings, exquisite pillars and arches.

Main temple and idol

Maansthamb in the temple complex

The idol of Bhagwan Chandraprabhu, the principal deity of Atishaya Kshetra Tijara is 15 inch in height made of white stone. According the inscription on the idol, it was installed on the 3rd day of Vishakha Shukla V.S. 1554. The second one is black in color, 8 inch in height, in the Padmasana Posture.

Both the idols, with others, are installed in a rectangular temple decorated with pinnacles. The hall of the temple has a capacity of 2000 persons. On both sides of the hall, the chambers and walls are decorated with glass and paintings based on mythological stories related to Jain history.[3]

Darshan system

Darshan(visiting of deity) in the temple is open to everyone. There is a belief that every true prayer is fulfilled.[citation needed] There is also a belief that the dust of the Kundli in this temple is a medicine for disease and sorrow.[4]
