Sarah Junior School

Sarah Junior School

Sarah Junior School is a pre-primary school for 65 children in the Mashimoni village in Kibera slum, Nairobi, Kenya. The school is funded by a charity based in the United Kingdom.

Kibera is the largest slum in Africa, home to an estimated 1 million people, most of whom are children[1].

The School was founded in September 2006 by British teenager Sarah Shucksmith, in partnership with a small group of Kiberan locals who teach the children and manage the school.

Sarah Junior School is a registered CBO (Community Based Organisation) in Kenya and a registered charity in the United Kingdom (charity number 119135).

Purpose

To establish Sarah Junior School in Kibera as a kindergarten school for 60 children aged 3 to 6 years old.

To remove any financial barriers that discriminate against children living in extreme poverty in Kibera from going to school, such as buying stationery, a uniform, and paying for a desk and exam fees.

To provide two hot meals a day to all pupils in the recognition that sufficient nutrition is necessary for the health, welfare and learning ability of the children.

To extend the provision of education in Sarah Junior School to include primary classes 1 to 8 in accordance with the Kenyan Education system.

Mission and Vision

By the year 2020 Sarah Junior School will provide kindergarten and primary education to children aged 3 to 15 years old living in extreme poverty in Kibera, with a capacity for at least 30 pupils in each academic year.

For all children in Kenya to have access to education and for the eradication of all barriers that prevent children in Kenya from completing kindergarten, primary and secondary school.

Operating structure

The charity operates by the principle that Western charities should act in an enabling, not prescriptive, manner.

The school is run and managed by Kenyan volunteers and all teachers and other personnel employed are local residents in Kibera.

The trustees of the school, based in the UK, give advice, encouragement and support where necessary. All funds are raised in the UK by generous donors.
