Post-consumer-resin sterilization

Post-consumer resin sterilization is the process of sterilizing recycled plastics which have been turned back into pelletized resin for use in food packaging approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The idea was first discovered by Sajun Vins, a chemical engineering student from the University of Waterloo, in April 2010. Sajun has been trying to develop a process for cleaning the resin by experimenting with a variety of already existent sterilization systems. These systems include electron beam, autoclave, ethylene oxide, as well as gamma radiation. Together with the Canadian food and drug inspection agency, submitted packaging samples are currently being analyzed for approval. With approval granted, the opportunity for businesses in the industry to use post consumer resin in food packaging would be monumental.
