The Kosovo Portal
Kosovo (pronounced /ˈkɒsəvoʊ, ˈkoʊsəvoʊ/; Albanian: Kosovë, Kosova; is a region in southeastern Europe. It became a disputed territory following the collapse of Yugoslavia. The partially recognised Republic of Kosovo (Albanian: Republika e Kosovës; Serbian: Република Косово, Republika Kosovo), a self-declared independent state, has de facto control over most of the territory, with North Kosovo being the largest Kosovo Serb enclave. Serbia does not recognise the unilateral secession of Kosovo and considers it a UN-governed entity within its sovereign territory, the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija (Serbian: Аутономна Покрајина Косово и Метохија, Autonomna Pokrajina Kosovo i Metohija), according to the 2006 Constitution of Serbia.

Pristina (Albanian: Prishtinë or Prishtina; Serbian: Приштина or Priština), is the capital and the largest city of Kosovo.
It is estimated that the current population of the city stands between 550,000 and 600,000. The city has an overwhelming majority Albanian population alongside other smaller minority communities including Serbs and Roma. It is the political, cultural, and educational center of Kosovo. The city is home to the ancient Ulpiana settlement[1], the University of Pristina, and the Museum of Kosovo.
Selected biography
Stefan Lazar Hrebeljanović (Serbian Cyrillic: Стефан Лазар Хребељановић; 1329 – June 28 [O.S. June 15] 1389), also known as Tsar Lazar (Цар Лазар), was a medieval Serbian knez (Knyaz), ruler of Moravian Serbia, a part of the once powerful Serbian Empire under Dušan the Mighty. Lazar fought at the Battle of Kosovo with an army half the size of the Ottoman Empire and perished, together with most of the Serbian nobility and Murad I (See Miloš Obilić) which eventually led to the fall of Serbia as a sovereign state. The events are regarded as highly important for Serb national consciousness and the knez is venerated as a saint in the Serbian Orthodox Church and a hero in Serbian epic poetry.
