Sol-Iletsk ( _ru. Соль-Иле́цк) is a town in
Orenburg Oblast ,Russia , located on the right bank of theIlek River (Ural'stributary ), 77 km south ofOrenburg . Population: 26,883 (2002 Census); 22,000 (1975); 11,802 (1897).Sol-Iletsk was founded in the 17th century as a Cossack settlement. In the mid-18th century, it was renamed Iletskaya Zashchita (Iletsk Defences) due to the construction of
fortification s. The name was then changed to Iletsk in the 19th century. In 1945, the town was renamed yet again and came to be known as Sol-Iletsk. A thick bed of excellentrocksalt is worked near this town (hence, the word "sol" ( _ru. соль) in the town's name, which meanssalt in Russian). The place is also known as a balneological resort for itsmineral water s, salt, mud, andbrine baths, and itskoumiss cures.References
