It lies on the eastern edge of the territory inhabited by Gottschee Germans that were mostly expelled in 1941 during the Second World War. The area is part of the historical region of Lower Carniola. The municipality is now included in the Southeast Slovenia statistical region.[2]
The Society of the Gottscheers Native Inhabitants[3] (Društvo Kočevarjev staroselcev / Gottscheer Altsiedlerverein) founded by descendants of Gottscheer Germans in neighboring Kočevske Poljane in 1992, among them some of the last speakers of Gottscheerish, has its seat in a former inn bought by the association in 1998.[4]
