Nowhere Man is a thriller by John M. Green, published in 2010. The story centres around Sonya Wheen, a university business professor at the University of NSW in Sydney, Australia.

The novel draws on the author's background in law, banking and mergers and acquisitions. It starts at the time of, and draws in, the global financial crisis.

The scene is set with the sudden mysterious disappearance of Sonya's long term partner, Michael, the dire financial circumstances she finds herself in and her search for Michael.

The settings include Sydney Harbour, New York, and Princeton University.

Plot

The novel incorporates mystery, murder, high finance, corporate deals, the financial crisis, new technologies, love, sex, motorcycle and cab chases, and conspiracy.

Background story

The novel was originally written in draft before the 9/11 destruction of the World Trade Center with events set in the towers. Two bankers the author had met with not long before 9/11 died in the terrorist attacks. Out of respect for the people who died the novel was substantially rewritten.

The author

John M Green was at different times a partner in two major Sydney law firms and was later an executive director of Macquarie Bank. He lives with his wife, a sculptor and their two adult children in Sydney. He writes articles for a number of financial publications. He is also a director of two companies listed on the Australian stock exchange. This is his first novel.

Philanthropy

Part of the profits from the novel go to an Australian charity The Smith Family for their Let's Read early childhood programme.
