Campbell Slemp (
December 2 ,1839 –October 13 ,1907 ), was an American Republican politician, and a United States Representative from the 9th District of Virginia from 1903 to 1907, during the 58th, 59th, and 60th Congresses.Born near
Turkey Cove in Lee County,Virginia , he attendedEmory and Henry College in Emory,Virginia . In his early life, he pursued agriculture and private real estate business.During the Civil War, Slemp served in the
Confederate Army as acaptain andlieutenant colonel of the Twenty-first Virginia Battalion. He also served ascolonel of the Sixty-fourth Regiment, which was composed of Infantry and Cavalry.In 1879, he was elected to the
Virginia House of Delegates ; he served there until 1882. As a leader in the Virginia State Republican party, Slemp made an unsuccessful bid for Lieutenant Governor in 1889. In 1903 he was elected to theUnited States House of Representatives , where he served until his death in 1907.Following Slemp's interment in the family cemetery in Lee County,
Virginia , his sonC. Bascom Slemp was selected to fill his vacancy; he served as the United States Representative for the 9th District of Virginia from 1907 to 1922.
