Campbell Slemp

Campbell Slemp (December 2, 1839 – October 13, 1907), was an American Republican politician, and a United States Representative from the 9th District of Virginia from 1903 to 1907, during the 58th, 59th, and 60th Congresses.

Born near Turkey Cove in Lee County, Virginia, he attended Emory and Henry College in Emory, Virginia. In his early life, he pursued agriculture and private real estate business.

During the Civil War, Slemp served in the Confederate Army as a captain and lieutenant colonel of the Twenty-first Virginia Battalion. He also served as colonel of the Sixty-fourth Regiment, which was composed of Infantry and Cavalry.

In 1879, he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates; he served there until 1882. As a leader in the Virginia State Republican party, Slemp made an unsuccessful bid for Lieutenant Governor in 1889. In 1903 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, where he served until his death in 1907.

Following Slemp's interment in the family cemetery in Lee County, Virginia, his son C. Bascom Slemp was selected to fill his vacancy; he served as the United States Representative for the 9th District of Virginia from 1907 to 1922.
